Approaching Flurries

Here is a study on canvas of an approaching snow squall on the Fall  River in Central Oregon.  This is a favorite spot of mine as I used to spend hours out there.  The water is crystal clear and a fantastic trout stream.  This particular spot is where the river is about to meet the famed Deschutes River.

The majestic and rugged Pueblo Mountains in southeastern are home to a wide variety of high desert wildlife including pronghorn antelope.  On a recent chukar hunting trip, we bumped some pronghorn out of their beds and had a great view of them as they ran by.

The wind clears a storm that has just rolled through.  I was captured by the movement of the clouds as wells as by the depth this scene presented with the distant tree line and nearby island.

Here is a serene painting of a flock of greenwing teal - one of my favorite duck species.  They are the smallest of the dabbling ducks which basically means they tip up to feed instead of dive.  Greenwings are fast and acrobatic flyers and are always exciting to see!

Bufflehead

Buffleheads are named for their larger, striking heads.  They are buoyant birds that disappear under the waters surface to feed on invertebrates then reappear again.  Since these are diving ducks they prefer larger, deeper bodies of water.  However, they nest in woodpecker holes.

A male goldfinch finds a moment of rest among the quaking aspen leaves.  Aspens are my favorite trees.  The sound their leaves make on breezy days is therapeutic and reminds me of the mountains.  In fact, we have planted several in our front yard for this very reason and this scene is from one of those trees.

A mother merganser leads her ducklings into what appears to be a precarious situation but, although new to rougher water, these ducks are already expert swimmers...  I think it is important to note that the glowing translucency of the light in the deep rapid is what captured my attention and inspired this painting.

After a few months of studying this painting to figure out where and how to add some ducks, it finally hit me.  Harlequin ducks resting on the rocks. Originally, I was kicking around the idea of hooded mergansers, but harlequins fit the habitat better as they nest on inland streams just like this each spring and summer.  The brilliant markings of the male also add a nice accent to the painting.
