The Kids

The Kids  8" x 10"  graphite
SOLD
This pencil drawing was a gift to my wife this year for Christmas.  It features our kids at this stage in life and I was focusing on capturing their personalities in a relaxed and natural state.  In order to get them to look like this she started tickling him!  My wife loved it:)

Kingfisher  5" x 7"  acrylic  $295
Named for their fishing prowess, a belted kingfisher flies low inspecting a pond for something to catch.  These birds can often be heard before they are seen with their loud calls.  However, they are shy birds and will not stay visible for long.

Flock of Teal

Flock of Teal  5" x 7"  acrylic
SOLD
Here is a serene painting of a flock of greenwing teal - one of my favorite duck species.  They are the smallest of the dabbling ducks which basically means they tip up to feed instead of dive.  Greenwings are fast and acrobatic flyers and are always exciting to see!

Bufflehead

Bufflehead  5" x 7"  acrylic
SOLD
Buffleheads are named for their larger, striking heads.  They are buoyant birds that disappear under the waters surface to feed on invertebrates then reappear again.  Since these are diving ducks they prefer larger, deeper bodies of water.  However, they nest in woodpecker holes.

Goldfinch and Aspen

Goldfinch and Aspen  9" x 12"
acrylic
SOLD
A male goldfinch finds a moment of rest among the quaking aspen leaves.  Aspens are my favorite trees.  The sound their leaves make on breezy days is therapeutic and reminds me of the mountains.  In fact, we have planted several in our front yard for this very reason and this scene is from one of those trees.

Autumn Gold

Autumn Gold  5" x 7"  acrylic  $295
A grove of aspens is illuminated by the low afternoon light in Grand Teton National Park.  The colors of fall are always an amazing experience and this spot was so stunning when I saw it that I painted it twice from different angles.  The other painting is a little bigger and called Teton Gold.

Class 2

 Class 2  5" x 7"  acrylic
SOLD
A mother merganser leads her ducklings into what appears to be a precarious situation but, although new to rougher water, these ducks are already expert swimmers...  I think it is important to note that the glowing translucency of the light in the deep rapid is what captured my attention and inspired this painting.

McDowell Creek Harlequins

McDowell Creek Harlequins
16" x 20"  acrylic  $3800
After a few months of studying this painting to figure out where and how to add some ducks, it finally hit me.  Harlequin ducks resting on the rocks. Originally, I was kicking around the idea of hooded mergansers, but harlequins fit the habitat better as they nest on inland streams just like this each spring and summer.  The brilliant markings of the male also add a nice accent to the painting.

Gentle Wave 5" x 7" acrylic  $295

The site, sound and smell of the rhythmic surf is one of my favorite parts of visiting the coast.  Even though this is a gentler wave on a calm day, capturing a crashing wave in paint is always challenging as there is so much subtlety involved with moving, translucent water.

McDowell Creek

McDowell Creek  7x5

McDowell Creek runs near my home in Oregon and is a beautiful place to go for day hikes.  Several inspiring waterfalls occur along the path as well - one of which has been painted:)   Here, I wanted to show the beauty of the creek and highlight it's clear, cold water in a more serene section.

Feeding Rufous  7" x 5"
acrylic  $295
A rufous hummingbird feeds on freshly opened spring flowers.  This is the same hummingbird that I observed at McDowell Creek near my home a few weeks ago. He had quite a dominant grasp on his territory as he went from flower to flower and perch to perch.  While working out the composition for this piece. images of simplified Far Eastern bird paintings kept coming to mind.

Sutter Butte Sunbreak

Sutter Butte Sunbreak  12" x 24"
acrylic

As storm clouds clear, the sun begins to break over the Sutter Buttes.  The calm water reflects the surrounding wetland and mallard are using the area to rest.  The Sutter Buttes are the worlds smallest mountain range and are located in the heart of the Sacramento Valley -   an area rich in farming, wetlands and waterfowl.  They are the result of volcanic lava domes and some geologists say that they may be the southernmost portion of the Cascade volcanic chain.

Osprey

Osprey  5" x 7"  acrylic
SOLD
This past Friday, I led a school group out to one of our local wildlife areas to teach them about birds.  We came across a fishing pond stocked with trout and sure enough there were several ospreys fishing - along with quite a few fisherman.  Nobody was having any luck including the osprey which are expert fisherman.  However, their large eyes and high vantage point seemed to give them the edge over the bobber, bait and wait method.
